A wedding detail shot is a picture taken on your wedding day that focuses on specific, often small, but significant elements of the wedding day, such as rings, invitations, shoes, or flowers.
But really it can include anything that matters to you whether it be the centerpieces on your tables to show the style of the wedding, pictures of the groom’s tuxedo or the bride’s dress draped over a fine lounge chair or even something as simple as the invitations and miscellaneous trinkets laid out on a table.
The beginning of the style is hard to pinpoint but generally as the quality and skill of cameras got better then around the same time more detailed shots became more common in capturing wedding magic. (Source)

Detail shots can be almost anything!
As wedding trends come and go wedding detail shots are a constant showing no signs of slowing down. This is because you spend months obsessing over the tiny details and don't really have the time to step back and look at it all on your wedding day! Details matter!
In addition to the previous reason that it is so popular is because one style of photo has an almost countless amount of variations! The evolution and variations of wedding detail shots are countless.
Common examples are pictures of wedding rings, color coordinating decor and cologne.
But just a few eye-catching uncommon examples of detail shots are end of night details, hair pieces,
you can even incorporate the scenery of your venue, the vibe, nature even the drinks, bottoms up! (Source)
But a good piece of advise is to make sure what ever you are photographing can fit inside a small box, like a shoe box because it is easier to keep things in one place and to keep you and your photography team from having an impromptu scavenger hunt.
